John Rushforth

Associate, Higher Education

John is currently Executive Secretary at Committee of University Chairs (CUC) and responsible for the HE Code of Governance, CUC Practice Notes on Remuneration Committees, and Prevent and Academic Governance. He is a member of the Higher Education UK-wide Standing Committee for Quality. He is also Deputy Chair of the South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group.

He also has wide experience of several sectors working in Local Government, then for the Audit Commission, the Higher Education Funding Council before retiring from his full-time position as Deputy Vice Chancellor and Clerk to the Board of Governors at the University of West of England. John was a senior assessor for the European Foundation for Quality Management and has worked on several projects in collaboration with EFQM and the OECD e.g. performance management, innovation management and knowledge management. He was also a Board member of the Council of Management of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

John has degrees from The University of Sheffield and The Open University. He is a qualified accountant He has developed and published a wide range of good practice guidance for the English HE sector including strategic planning, estates strategy formulation, IT management, risk management, and space management. His work these days mainly focusses on governance plus strategic management reviews.
