Catherine Barber-Brown

Associate, Strategy, Change & Capital Raising

Catherine is an experienced, creative and driven strategist and leader with over 20 years’ experience across strategy, change and capital raising, focused most recently on the mutual financial services sector and transformation of purpose-lead organisations.  She has worked with multiple sectors including financial services, health tech, education, transport, telecoms and health.

Between 2003 and early 2016, Catherine held senior roles at the Britannia Building Society and Co-operative Bank.  She was most recently Head of Strategy for the Co-operative Bank, whilst earlier roles spanned Change Management and Procurement. Prior to this Catherine worked for ten years on capital markets transactions at international organisations Barclays de Zoete Wedd and Credit Suisse.  She now runs her own consultancy, where she is advising purpose-led organisations.

She enjoys creating answers to complex problems and bringing her skills to bear on new subjects, with a reputation for cutting through complexity to strategic issues and a collaborative and creative working style.

In recent years Catherine has been Interim Business Development Director for the NHS Transformation Unit, and led analysis for Coop Bank Board on Northern Powerhouse and Devolution implications, designed and co-led the 2014 Values and Ethics poll of customers, which strengthened the brand, and refreshed the bank’s iconic Values and Ethics Policy.  She designed the Target Business Model for the retail banking arm and the Strategic Risk Policy and Controls for the bank and led the Executive due diligence process in negotiating the £150m capital restructure. Previous work include developing the Purpose, Vision and Values for the bank, designing and running highly engaging Board Strategy days around industry trends, risks and opportunities and assessing the impact of a range of strategic options to change the Business Model and Operating Model of the Banking Group.  Capital raising experience includes Telecom Italia, Jomed medical devices, Litrak tollroad and the oldest bank in the world.

Catherine is a Member of the University of Manchester General Assembly and Nominations Committee, a school governor and a Non-Executive Director of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.
